This year will see the 12th running of this cycle event that once again will be run as a time trial over the same 13.5mile course as recent years. Entrants should note the start time of 9.30am. This is to allow competitors to enter this event and the 10k foot race. This arrangement would be suitable for participants of triathlon events. Anyone who wishes an early start time must enter by the cut-off date and advise the organiser if they are doing both events. The entry fee remains the same at £10.00 for an adult and £5.00 for a junior or entrants can raise sponsorship for at least these amounts, with the person raising the most money eligible for a cash prize. The cause to benefit from all money raised this year is Kelso Pipe Band who are raising funds to purchase new kilts. The pipe band provides support for Civic Week and lead the cavalcade at the ride outs and play at numerous other events.
Entries are warmly welcomed from individuals or groups who wish to take part as fun entrants over a shorter 7 mile course and the entry fee for fun entrants is £5.00 for adults and £2.00 for juniors. Fun runners will leave in a bunch at 9.15am. This route follows the A698 to Eden Mouth (3 miles), taking a left turn where signposted Highridgehall and continuing to Ednam via Cliftonhill. Take care on the descent from Cliftonhill as the road end at Ednam (5 miles) soon comes upon you. At this road end you turn left over the bridge on the main road and stay on the B6461 and return to Kelso. Please note that fun runners can also tackle the full route but anyone doing this must make the organisers aware of this before they set off. Cheques for all entries should be made payable to the Kelso Laddies Association.
Registration for all events takes place at the club rooms of Kelso Football Club at Woodside Park, situated just off Drying House Lane and all competitors and fun riders must register by no later than 8.45am. The riders must make their way to the official start next to Kelso Cemetery on the Coldstream Road. To reach the start turn left out of the football ground and turn left at the roundabout. The start is approximately quarter of a mile from the roundabout.
There are five categories for entrants and these are –
Juniors – 16 and under on the day of the event for the Simon Porteous (Cycles) Trophy
Veterans – 40 and over on the day of the event for the Colin Dumma Cup
Senior Ladies for the John Butler (Roofing) Cup
Senior Men for the Stuart Chalmers (Painting & Decorating) Cup
Abbey Fitness Centre Trophy for the fastest entrant from the TD5 postal code area
The Kelso Laddies Association is extremely grateful to all sponsors for their valued support of this event and to Kelso Football Club for the use of their facilities and to the marshals for their help and guidance to entrants. Please note all prizes will be presented back at the football club after the race once all results have been confirmed.
Refreshments will be available to all entrants after the race. A special thank you to Rothbury Bakers of The Square, Kelso for their sponsorship of the tray bakes.
All entrants must wear approved cycle helmets and supply their own spares, drinks and food etc during the race as no back-up facilities will be available. Limited transport back to Kelso may be available to anyone who suffers mechanical or physical breakdown during the race. All entrants take part at their own risk.
If anyone would like a copy of the start list before the event they should enclose a stamped addressed envelope along with their entry form and a further SAE if a list of results is also required. Please note entries will be accepted by e-mail and list of entrants/results can be e-mailed if preferred.

It should be noted that due to the popularity of this event the maximum number of entrants for the racing section is restricted to 40. Entries up to this amount will be taken on the day but cannot be guaranteed. This means it would be advisable to pre-enter. The entry fee must be paid in full along with the submitted entry form. Anyone who does get an entry on the day will have to accept the starting slot allocated. There is no limit on numbers for the fun run section. Sponsor sheets are also available from Colin.
The route for the main race starts next to Kelso Cemetery and follows the A698 to Birgham where riders go through the village and take the first sharp left after the village at 5.5miles onto the unclassified road heading north. On this road there are double bends at the 5.9mile mark and again at Eccles Newton Farm at 7.2 miles. The route takes a right at the road end 7.4miles and continues up the hill and onto further double bends at 7.9miles. Continue on this road until you reach the village of Eccles and take a left turn onto the B6461 sign posted Kelso where riders remain on this road until the finish. There are further sharp double bends at the end of the village. There are further double bends at 10.6miles and a sharp bend at 11.6miles. The riders then cross the bridge at Ednam (11.9miles) and continue onto the finish just after the entrance to Broomlands School in Kelso at 13.5miles.
Please note all junctions and road ends where there is a change in direction will be marshalled – you must not turn off any road unless advised by a marshal. There are also directional signs at strategic points. Please note all the above distances are approximate as they have been measured by cycle computer.
The organisers are grateful to the many marshals and other helpers for their contribution to this event.
Spectators are invited along the route to view the race and cheer the entrants on.
Since it started the race has also raised several thousands of the pounds for various local charities and good causes and virtually all the money raised goes direct to these causes with only a small amount used to cover minor expenses.
A fun cycle ride of approximately 5 miles will also take place on Thursday 19th July leaving The Knowes car park and following the horses as they make their way to Floors Castle. The route will be via Woodmarket, The Square, Roxburgh Street and through the gates to the estate. The cyclists split from the horses once they reach the castle and take a leisurely ride through the grounds of the estate via the garden centre and follow a track to come round the front of the castle and onto the end of the cycle ride, usually around 6-00pm, in the field where the horse events take place where refreshments will be provided. All children under 14 years of age should be accompanied by an adult and all riders must wear suitable approved cycling headgear.
Any cyclist who doesn’t wear an approved cycling helmet will be asked to leave the ride.
Parents should also ensure a responsible person is on hand to meet their child at the end of the cycle ride in the grounds of Floors Castle. All those taking part should ensure their bikes are roadworthy and fit for the route and carry a basic repair kit and their own refreshments for the route. Please note that road racing bikes are not suitable for this event as there is a lengthy section over rough track.
